Recently, the IAA Mobility show in Munich showcased the next wave of Volkswagen Group’s electric vehicle strategy. Some facts came out of the presentation, such as the Volkswagen brand’s leadership in EV worldwide.
In this country, that push towards electric vehicle leadership began with the Volkswagen ID.4 – a crossover that exhibited the brand’s EV platform and a new design language that went along with its EV ambitions. Since its introduction in 2020, ID.4 production has shifted to the assembly facility in Chattanooga, Tennessee for our consumption.
The 2025 ID.4 continues to bring plenty of promise for electric vehicle consumers. It offers more space in a compact crossover/SUV, as well as more range and a choice of drivelines.
The basic design of the ID.4 is softer than you would expect from a Volkswagen. A plain front end has some shape to it, punctuated by the VW logo and a pair of LED headlamp units. The profile offers an optical illusion with the extended roof spoiler placed over a rakish high-opening liftgate. You will also find wide opening doors for occupants for ease of entry and exit.
Our Pro AWD tester came with a set of 20-inch alloy wheels and a nice blue monochrome paint job.
Inside the ID.4 is a very useful interior with plenty of soft touch materials. The digital instrument pod offers clear readouts and is attached to the adjustable steering column. That is where you will find the shifter stalk with a twist actuator. The 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen dominates the center stack. Most controls are haptic touch for various functions.
The cloth and leatherette seats were very comfortable and relaxing both front and back. We like the comfort these seats gave us, as well as the generous space for 4-5 adults inside. Be prepared to be amazed at the rear seat room alone with excellent leg and head room. Cargo space starts with 30.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats. Fold down the rear seats, and you have up to 64.2 cubic feet of room for hauling home a day’s shopping.

Driving our tester is a dual-motor set-up with an electric motor at each axle. Combined, you have 335 horsepower and a total of 501 pound-feet of torque. This system is powered by an 82-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that lies completely flat underneath the passenger cabin. The Environmental Protection Agency rated the ID.4 to return 263 miles of range at a full state of charge.
There is a quiet sensation when driving the ID.4. The instant torque comes in and takes off quickly from a full stop. It cruises very well and manages both city and highway traffic with ease. The ride quality is solid, managing rougher road surfaces with superb suspension travel. It also handles smoothly, offering quick response in evasive maneuvers.
While it felt more artificial, we found the steering to be sharp with one of the tightest turning radiuses in its class. On-center feel was on-point and held the lane perfectly. The brakes were also very good, with solid stops in normal and panic situations. Not only did we find the pedal feel to be solid, but we also like the fact that we did not feel any hesitation when it was regenerating energy back to the battery pack.
There are five trim levels available on the 2025 ID.4, including three dual-motor AWD models. Pricing starts from $45,095. Our Pro AWD tester came with a sticker price of $51,566.
The Volkswagen ID.4 has been positioned in a growing segment among electric vehicles. It is compared to similarly sized SUVs, such as the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Toyota bZ, Subaru Solterra, Nissan Ariya, Kia EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Rivian R2 and R3, Chevrolet Equinox EV and Blazer EV.
Even as the tax breaks for electric vehicles will no longer be available to consumers, opportunities will come up for you to get one that fits your lifestyle and return smiles over every mile. That sound like a Volkswagen. It also sounds like the 2025 ID.4.
