This is the smallest SUV Volkswagen offers today. The mission of the Volkswagen Taos remains the same – providing an entry-sized SUV with a signature design and the brand’s know-how to entice you to own one. For 2025, Volkswagen updated it with a new front and rear fascia, newer technology, and more power.
While newer entries into the small SUV space has made things interesting for everyone else, we had to know whether the freshened up 2025 Volkswagen Taos can still bring brand loyalists – and new customers – into the fold.
It starts with a fresh front end inspired by the ID.4. The upper part of the front clip has two LED headlamp units with solid black trim and the familiar Volkswagen logo, while a lower grille dominates the bumper area, framed by a stain piece of chrome. Out back, a rear LED lightning unit stretches across the liftgate horizontally. That includes a lighted logo. Otherwise, the 2025 Taos continues with a familiar profile with a a good-sized glass area. 
Our SE Black Edition tester wore 18-inch dark finished alloy wheels, along with a few subtle black finishes that are tastefully done. Even the satin chrome grille surround is finished in black. The upper front clip incorporates a light bar bridging both headlamp units. You will also find a panoramic roof on this model. 
There are some updates to the interior, as well. The eight-inch Digital Cockpit instrument cluster is clear to use and comprehend. That, along with the eight-inch infotainment screen placed on a new “floating” panel. The latter offers smartphone integration wirelessly as well as through two USB-C ports. The center vents are located below the screen, which could be a challenge for taller front occupants. We also like the quick shifter and steering wheel, as well.
The CloudTex and cloth seats were comfortable and supportive. The second-row seat space is large for a vehicle in its class. A tall person can get comfortable in the second row behind an equally tall driver. Rear cargo space is very generous for a vehicle in its class. There is 27.9 cubic feet behind the second-row seats. Fold those seats down to get a maximum cargo space of 65.9 cubic feet. 
The big update for 2025 is the more powerful 174-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. With 184 pound-feet of torque, there is plenty of pulling power for merging onto the highway or for passing. Power is channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission sending it onward to all four wheels through the 4Motion system.
We noticed a marked difference in performance with the increased horsepower. Passing maneuvers were accomplished with ease. Cruising was also smooth, enhanced by the Adaptive Cruise Control system, along with Travel Assist and Lane Assist. As for fuel economy, we observed an average of 31.9 MPG.
The ride quality was very good on smooth surfaces, while absorbing rougher spots very well. The handling has improved and is more controlled than before. It can take on curves with ease now.
The steering system was responsive with some feedback from the wheels. On-center feel is spot on. It can do tight turns very well. The brakes were also fine, with good pedal feel. It delivered solid stops in normal and panic situations. 
There are four trim levels available on the 2025 Volkswagen Taos. Pricing starts at $25,495. Our SE Black Edition 4MOTION tester came with a sticker price of $33,770.
The segment where the 2025 Volkswagen Taos competes in continues to draw new customers to the fold. It competes well against the Jeep Compass, Chevrolet Trax and Trailblazer, Buick Encore GX and Envista, Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Subaru Crosstrek, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Nissan Kicks, Mazda CX-30 and Ford Bronco Sport.
